Anti-bias and anti-racist education is the cornerstone of our curriculum. Blue Jay students feel confident in their identity, embrace difference, confront injustice, and make change. We care for our community by cooking meals for our neighbors experiencing food insecurity and distributing supplies. We write letters to our elected representatives and come up with creative ideas to make systemic change. Who takes care of us? We take care of us!
We’re more than preschool — we’re a community. At school, children have a chance to participate in every aspect of our day, from cooking and cleaning to planning curriculum. After school hours, the same sense of community is nurtured through monthly family gatherings, all-school camping trips, and school events that honor our connection with the Earth and each other.
Blue Jay Preschool House is an inclusive, child-centered environment rooted in trauma informed teaching. We believe that relationships come first, and we take the time to form deep connections with each of our students. At school, children work on communication, conflict resolution, developing emotional literacy skills, and mindfulness.
Play is the work of childhood, and imagination teaches us to soar. Blue Jay teachers nurture curiosity and wonder each day through intentional play invitations and unstructured encounters with the natural world. Every single day, we ask questions, build hypotheses alongside the children, research, and find ways to test our theories. We embrace each child’s first job as scientists, and learn alongside our students.
We spend hours outside every single day, in all kinds of weather. We notice the changing of seasons, uncover a plethora of natural mysteries, and invite each of our students to connect to the Earth in their own way. Blue Jay students are invited to dig in the dirt, plan and tend our school garden, and care for animals in our science lab.
At Blue Jay, we sing and dance and tell silly stories and laugh until our bellies hurt. We honor all of the moments of joy during our time together, and delight in the wonder of early childhood. There’s nowhere else we’d like to spend our days.
